He is best known for his significant supporting role as the Comte De Guiche in the 1950 film Cyrano de Bergerac, which was the first English-language sound version of Edmond Rostand's classic play and the film for which Jose Ferrer won an Academy Award for Best Actor. Alongside Ferrer, Clanton was the only cast holdover from the 1946 Broadway revival of the play, and he later reprised the role of De Guiche opposite Ferrer in a 1953 New York City Center production.
