In 2012, she starred as Hushpuppy in the drama film Beasts of the Southern Wild, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress that made her the youngest actress ever nominated in the category and the first actor born in the 21st century to be nominated for an Oscar. She subsequently appeared in Steve McQueen's film 12 Years a Slave in 2013 and starred as Annie Bennett in the 2014 adaptation of Annie, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.
