He secured his first minor screen roles in 1960 in Yves Allégret's film Chien de pique, performing alongside Eddie Constantine. Among his notable roles, he played the gangster lover of a bourgeois prostitute portrayed by Catherine Deneuve in Luis Buñuel's 1967 classic Belle de jour, and he played the Devil in Buñuel's film La voie lactée. Throughout his career, he appeared in several highly regarded films, working with directors such as Luchino Visconti in The Leopard, Pier Paolo Pasolini in Pigsty, and Bernardo Bertolucci.
