Peter Watkins was an English filmmaker, documentarian, writer, and film theorist born in Norbiton, Surrey, England, UK on October 29, 1935. He passed away on October 30, 2025, at the age of ninety. Known as a pioneer of the docudrama and mockumentary genres, his films typically featured heavy political content, presenting pacifist and radical ideas in a nontraditional style. He focused his works and ideas around the mass media and the relationship and participation of viewers regarding movies and television documentaries. Nearly all of his films combined dramatic and documentary elements to dissect historical occurrences or possible near future events. His work included the film Culloden, which portrayed the Jacobite uprising of 1745 in a documentary style, and the commercial feature film Privilege in 1967.
