He attended Georgetown University, where he studied political science and Italian before pursuing a career in comedy and performance. Welsh became active in television and sketch comedy, and by 2008 he was a noteworthy member of the improv and sketch community, performing extensively at the Upright Citizens Brigade on both coasts and regularly appearing with the house improv team JV.
