Park Chan-wook is a South Korean filmmaker and former film critic who was born in Seoul, South Korea on August 23, 1963. Known professionally by his name, he is recognized as a leading figure in South Korean and twenty-first-century world cinema. He is known for crafting films that combine crime, mystery, and thriller elements with other genres, and his projects are noted for their framing, cinematography, black humor, and often brutal subject matter.

Park Chan-wook began his directing career with two unsuccessful films in the 1990s, which he has since largely disowned. He subsequently rose to prominence with his third directorial effort, Joint Security Area, released in the year 2000.
