Sönmez graduated from the Istanbul University Mining Engineering Department and subsequently attended the Dialog Communication Acting School of Can and Arsen Gürzap. He later studied theatre at Yeditepe University. Sönmez began his acting career in 1999 with the television series Akşam Güneşi, sharing the lead role with Serdar Gökhan.
