Norma Crane was born on November 10, 1928, in New York City and grew up in El Paso, Texas. She entered the acting profession under her birth name, Norma Anna Bella Zuckerman, and became a member of Elia Kazan’s Actors Studio. Her stage debut came with a role in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, launching a career that spanned Broadway, film and television. During the 1950s she worked extensively in live television drama, first attracting notice in a televised adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 and later appearing as a guest star in a 1959 television episode.

Crane’s film work includes the role for which she is most widely remembered: Golde, the wife of Tevye, in the 1971 cinematic version of Fiddler on the Roof. She also appeared in the movies They Call Me Mister Tibbs! and Penelope. Across her career she accumulated credits in both television series and feature films, totaling dozens of performances. Norma Crane’s career was cut short by her death on September 28, 1973, at the age of 44, but her contributions to stage, screen and early television remain noted for their breadth and the memorable presence she brought to each role.
