He received a Bachelor of Arts in film studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1992, spent the following year studying film theory at the Sorbonne in Paris, and earned a Master of Fine Arts from New York University's Graduate Film Program in 1993. During the summer of 1994, he interned at a small production company and met Todd Solondz. In 1997, his debut feature film, Hurricane Streets, became the first narrative film to win three awards at the Sundance Film Festival, taking home the Audience Award, Best Director, and Best Cinematography.
