Throughout her career, she was affiliated with Big Apple Co., Ltd. and was nicknamed Miporin. She also used the pseudonyms Mizuho Kitayama and Issaque when writing lyrics. Nakayama made her debut on June 21, 1985, with her single C and a starring role in the film Be-Bop High School. Over her career, she recorded 22 studio albums and achieved eight number-one singles on Oricon's charts, with two selling over a million copies each. In 1995, director Shunji Iwai cast her in starring dual roles as Hiroko Watanabe and Itsuki. An autopsy revealed that her death was the result of an accident.
