Mari Selvaraj entered the Tamil film industry in 2006, initially intending to pursue acting before shifting his focus to direction. He began his behind‑the‑camera career as an assistant director to Ram, contributing to three of Ram’s films: Kattradhu Thamizh (2007), Thanga Meenkal (2013) and Taramani (2017). This apprenticeship provided Selvaraj with practical experience in storytelling and production, laying the groundwork for his own directorial ventures. In 2018 he made his debut as a director with Pariyerum Perumal, a film that received critical acclaim and was noted as one of the successful releases of that year. The movie established Selvaraj’s reputation for delivering hard‑hitting commentaries on the caste system and the social realities of contemporary Tamil Nadu.

Building on the momentum of his first feature, Selvaraj directed the Dhanush‑starrer Karnan in 2021. The film garnered widespread praise for its narrative and thematic depth and achieved notable box‑office success. Throughout his career, Selvaraj has been recognized for focusing on social justice issues and the marginalised communities within Tamil society.
