Biography
Marcel Camus (21 April 1912 – 13 January 1982) was a French film director born in Chappes, Ardennes, France. He originally studied art with the intention of becoming an art teacher, but his plans were disrupted by World II, during which he spent part of the conflict in a German prisoner‑of‑war camp. After his release, his uncle, novelist Roland Dorgelès, introduced him to French filmmakers, and Camus worked as an assistant to Jacques Feyder, Luis Buñuel and Jacques Becker. He is best known for directing Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus), which received the Palme d’Or at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1960. He was also credited as “Conte.”
