Biography

Lupita Amondi Nyong'o, born March 1, 1983, in Mexico City to Kenyan parents, is a Kenyan-Mexican actress and author. She began her career in Hollywood as a production assistant before making her acting debut in the 2008 short film East River. She starred in the television series Shuga from 2009 to 2012 and directed the 2009 documentary In My Genes. After earning a master's degree in acting from the Yale School of Drama, she gained international recognition for her portrayal of Patsey in 12 Years a Slave, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She is also known for roles in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Queen of Katwe, and Black Panther. Nyong'o has received numerous accolades, including a Daytime Emmy Award and nominations for British Academy Film Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a Tony Award.
