Lone Scherfig is a Danish film director born on May 2, 1959, in Søborg, Danmark. She graduated from the Danish Film School in 1984. Her career as a director began with Kaj's fødselsdag, also known as A Birthday Trip. She gained recognition with the Dogme95 romantic comedy Italian for Beginners, released in Italian as Italiensk for begyndere in the year 2000, which received the Silver Berlin Bear Jury Prize at the 2001 Berlin International Film Festival and is credited as the most profitable Scandinavian film to date. Her later directorial work includes the independent film An Education, which was released in 2009 and based on an autobiographical article by British journalist Lynn Barber. That film received three nominations at the 82nd Academy Awards.
