She is best known for her role as Denise Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show and for starring in its spinoff series A Different World. Her role earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1986. Her film work includes appearances in the psychological horror film Angel Heart in 1987, which earned her a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, the action thriller film Enemy of the State in 1998, and the comedy drama film High Fidelity in 2000.
