Lewis Shepard Stone was an American actor and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer contract player known for his role as Judge James Hardy in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Andy Hardy film series. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts to Bertrand Stone and Philena Heald Ball, his hair turned gray prematurely by age twenty. He served in the United States Army in the Spanish-American War before returning to a career as a writer and subsequently beginning acting. Stone was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1929 for The Patriot. Following this, he appeared in seven films with Greta Garbo, spanning the silent and early sound periods, which included portraying Doctor Otternschlag in Grand Hotel in 1932. He was also known for his work in Scaramouche and Three Godfathers.
