Kira Muratova was a film director, screenwriter, and actress of Romanian/Jewish descent. Born on November 5, 1934, in Soroca, she was known for her unusual directorial style. Muratova's films underwent censorship in the Soviet Union, yet she managed to build a successful film career from the 1960s onwards. She was a prominent figure in contemporary Cinema of Ukraine and Russian cinema. Muratova held the title of People's Artist of Ukraine, which she received in 1989, and was also an Academician of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, a position she held from 1997.
