Kate Williams was born on 1 January 1941 in London, England. She first gained public recognition in the 1970s as a regular cast member of the British sitcom Love Thy Neighbour. Her film work includes appearances in Poor Cow, Melody and the 1979 youth‑culture drama Quadrophenia. In the 1980s and early 1990s she became closely associated with Lynda La Plante’s crime series, appearing in Widows, its sequel Widows 2 and the follow‑up She’s Out; she was the only performer besides lead actress Ann Mitchell to feature in all three instalments. She also returned to sitcom television in the 1990s with a role in May to December.

Williams’s television résumé includes guest appearances on a range of long‑running British programmes. She has been seen in Dixon of Dock Green, On the Buses, Please Sir!, Minder, The Gentle Touch, Just Good Friends, C.A.T.S. Eyes, Only Fools and Horses, Murder Most Horrid, Lovejoy, Doctor At Large, Born and Bred and The Bill. In addition to these one‑off parts, she held regular roles in the soaps Family Affairs and EastEnders.
