Joseph Walton Losey III was an American theater and film director born on January 14, 1909, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. After studying in Germany with Bertolt Brecht, he returned to the United States and eventually went to Hollywood. In the 1950s, Losey was blacklisted in the United States and moved to Europe, living in England from late 1951 onward, where he made the remainder of his films, mostly in the United Kingdom. His notable directorial works include Don Giovanni, Sluha, and Pan Klein, alongside other dramatic films often characterized by a critical focus. Joseph Losey died in London, England, on June 22, 1984.
