Biography

Joko Anwar is an Indonesian film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor born on January 3, 1976, in Medan, Indonesia. He started his career as a journalist and film critic before becoming a filmmaker. His works include The Forbidden Door, which received the top prize at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, and A Copy of My Mind, which competed at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival. He also directed Satan's Slaves, the highest grossing horror of all time in Indonesia. Anwar first rose to prominence for co-writing Nia Dinata's hit Arisan, which won five awards at the 2004 Citra Award.
