Biography

John Gottowt, born Isidor Gesang on 15 June 1881 in Lemberg, Austria-Hungary (now Lviv, Ukraine), was an Austrian actor, stage director, and film director. He joined the Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1905, working under Max Reinhardt. Gottowt appeared in silent films, including Paul Wegener’s Der Student von Prag (1913), Robert Wiene’s Genuine (1920), and the science fiction film Algol. He is also known for his role in Nosferatu (1922). Gottowt died on 29 August 1942.
