Biography
John Cameron Mitchell is an American writer, director, and actor born in El Paso, Texas, on April 21, 1963. He is the son of a United States Army general and a Scottish mother, growing up on various army bases including Berlin and later living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he attended a Catholic school. Since the mid-1980s, he has worked as a theatre actor and director in New York City, playing small roles in television and film productions. He directed a play by Tennessee Williams and appeared in the original Broadway production of Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon's musical adaptation of The Secret Garden beginning in 1991. In the early 1990s, he developed a character with musician Stephen Trask. He is also known for his work on the films Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus.
