Jean-Paul Rappeneau was a French film director and screenwriter born on April 8, 1932, in Auxerre, Yonne, France. He began his film career as an assistant and screenwriter, collaborating with Louis Malle on Zazie dans le metro in 1960 and Vie privee in 1961. In 1964, he served as a co-screenwriter for L'Homme de Rio, which starred Jean-Paul Belmondo. The first film he both wrote and directed was A Matter of Resistance in 1965. His later directorial work included Les Maries de l'an II in 1971, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Marlene Jobert, as well as Le Sauvage and Tout feu, tout flamme. From 1975 onward, he wrote exclusively for his own films. He also served on the jury at the Cannes Festival in 1991.
