He began writing in the early 1970s and received the 1973 Fénéon Prize for his work Samedi, dimanche et fêtes, which translates in English to Saturday, Sunday and holidays. In 1979, he was awarded the Prix Renaudot for his novel Affaires étrangères, known in English as Foreign Affairs. Alongside his writing career, he served as an editor for Seuil, the Mercure de France, and Fayard, and worked as a director of Editions Stock. He died of cancer on March 25, 2013 at the age of 58.
