Born on September 8, 1963, in Amagasaki, Hyōgo, Japan, he is known for his work as the boke half of the popular owarai duo Downtown alongside Masatoshi Hamada. Matsumoto has directed and produced several movies, including Big Man Japan, which was shown at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight section. He has also starred in several of his own films, playing the main character.
