Giuseppe Tornatore is an Italian film director and screenwriter born on May 27, 1956, in Bagheria near Palermo. Also known as Peppuccio Tornatore, he developed an interest in acting and the theatre from at least the age of sixteen, putting on works by Luigi Pirandello and Eduardo De Filippo. He initially worked as a freelance photographer before switching to cinema. His debut was a collaborative documentary film titled Le minoranze etniche in Sicilia, which won a Salerno Festival prize. He subsequently worked for RAI before releasing his first full-length film, Il Camorrista, in 1985. The film evoked a positive response from audiences and critics, and Tornatore was awarded a Silver Ribbon.
