Gautham Vasudev Menon is an Indian film director, screenwriter, film producer, and actor born on February 25, 1973, in Ottapalam, Kerala, India. Known primarily for his work in the Tamil film industry, he has also directed Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam films. He studied mechanical engineering at Mookambigai College of Engineering, graduating in the batch of 1993, which later inspired the engineering background of the lead characters in his films Minnale and Vaaranam Aayiram. Influenced by films such as Dead Poets Society and Nayagan, he pursued a career in filmmaking, writing his first film in his college hostel. His mother insisted he become an ad filmmaker by shooting various commercials, and he subsequently took an apprenticeship under filmmaker Rajiv Menon before working as an assistant director for Minsaara Kanavu in 1997.
