She subsequently signed a contract with Warner Bros., beginning her film appearances in 1941. Emerson gained fame as a film actress in the 1940s, starring in several films noir, including Lady Gangster, and Howard Hawks's war film Air Force. In the 1950s, she transitioned to television, hosting her own talk show. Emerson passed away on March 9, 1983, at the age of sixty-five.
