Elina Avraamovna Bystritskaya was born on April 4, 1928, in Kiev, Ukrainian SSR, and lived until April 26, 2019. She was a Ukrainian-born Soviet and Russian stage and film actress and theater pedagogue. Bystritskaya is best known for her role as Aksiniya in Sergei Gerasimov's 1958 epic screening of Mikhail Sholokhov's novel And Quiet Flows the Don. She was chosen for the role by Sholokhov himself, surpassing several distinguished candidates, notably Nonna Mordyukova. Prior to this, she co-starred with Sergey Bondarchuk in Unfinished Story, an archetypal Socialist Realist film. During the 1960s, Bystritskaya transitioned to theatre work at the Maly Theatre, leading to sporadic screen appearances. She was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1978.
