Claude Barruck Joseph Lelouch was born on October 30, 1937, in the ninth arrondissement of Paris to parents Charlotte and grew up in an Algerian Jewish family. After completing his military service in the Army Cinematographic Corps, he established his own production company named Les Films 13. He emerged as a prominent director in the 1960s and gained international recognition along with critical acclaim for his 1966 romantic melodrama film A Man and a Woman. At the 39th Academy Awards in 1967, the film won Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film, and Lelouch received a nomination for Best Director.

Throughout his career, Lelouch has worked as a film director, writer, cinematographer, actor, and producer, accumulating 155 known credits in directing. While his films have achieved international recognition since the 1960s, his methods and style of film are known for attracting criticism.
