Charles Milles Manson was born on November 12, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and died on November 19, 2017, at the age of 83. Known primarily as a criminal and cult leader, Manson led the California-based Manson Family cult in the late 1960s. Cult members committed a series of nine murders at four locations in July and August 1969. In 1971, Manson was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the deaths of seven people, including film actress Sharon Tate. The prosecution argued that although Manson did not directly order the murders, his ideology constituted an overt act of conspiracy. Before these crimes, Manson had spent more than half of his life in correctional institutions and operated as a singer-songwriter on the fringe of the Los Angeles music scene while gathering his followers.
