Carlos Saura Atarés was a Spanish film director, photographer, and writer. Born on January 4, 1932, in Huesca, Aragón, Spain, he had a long and prolific career spanning over half a century. Alongside Luis Buñuel and Pedro Almodóvar, he is considered to be among Spain's great filmmakers. Saura began his career in 1955 by making documentary shorts, and he gained international prominence when his first feature-length film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1960. Initially filming as a neorealist, he later switched to films encoded with metaphors and symbolism to bypass Spanish censors. Saura died on February 10, 2023, at the age of 91.
