Burt Kennedy was an American screenwriter and director born in Muskegon, Michigan on September 3, 1922, and he died on February 15, 2001, at the age of 78. He is known mainly for directing film Westerns. Following World War II service in the 1st Cavalry Division, Kennedy wrote for radio and utilized his cavalry officer training to work as a fencing trainer and fencing stunt double in films. This work led to a writing job for an unproduced television program with a fencing theme for John Wayne's Batjac productions, which subsequently led to him writing screenplays for Batjac films beginning with the 1956 film Seven Men from Now.
