Career overview
Robert Charles Joseph Edward Sabatini Guccione was born on December 17, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York. He worked as a photographer and founded the adult magazine Penthouse in 1965. The magazine was created to compete with Hugh Hefner's Playboy, featuring more extreme erotic content, a special style of soft-focus photography, and in-depth reporting on government corruption scandals. By 1982, Guccione was included in the Forbes 400 wealth list and owned one of the largest mansions in Manhattan. However, extravagant investments that failed and the rise of free online pornography in the 1990s significantly diminished his market. In 2003, his publishers declared bankruptcy, and he resigned as chairman. Guccione passed away on October 20, 2010.
In addition to publishing, Guccione worked as a producer and actor. His involvement in film included the 1979 controversial historical drama erotic film Caligula, which he financed using approximately US $17.5 million of his personal fortune. That film featured Malcolm McDowell in the title role, alongside a supporting cast that included Helen Mirren, John Gielgud, and Peter O'Toole. His other known credits include Lowball in 1996 and Penthouse Interactive Virtual Photo Shoot Vol. 1 in 1994.
