Biography

Arturo Ripstein y Rosen is a Mexican film director and screenwriter born on December 13, 1943, in Mexico City, Mexico. Considered the godfather of independent Mexican cinema, his work is characterized by somber, slow-paced, and macabre melodramas tackling existential loneliness. As the son of producer Alfredo Ripstein Jr., he familiarized himself with Mexican cinematography from a young age. Ripstein got his break into movies working as an uncredited assistant director for Luis Buñuel, beginning with the 1962 film El ángel exterminador. In 1965, he directed his first feature, a western titled Tiempo de morir, which was written by Carlos Fuentes and Gabriel García Márquez and produced by his father. This began a tradition of making independent films written by high-profile Latin-American authors. His 1981 film Seduction and his 1989 film Love Lies were both entered into the Moscow International Film Festival. In 1997, Ripstein won the National Prize of Arts and Sciences, becoming the second filmmaker after Buñuel to do so.
