He is known for directing and is recognized for the Emmy-winning documentary series The Jinx. He also directed the documentary film Capturing the Friedmans, which received eighteen international prizes, including the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the New York Film Critics Circle award, and earned an Academy Award nomination. In addition to his filmmaking career, he was the co-founder and chief executive officer of Moviefone, a service providing film schedules over the telephone that was sold to AOL in 1999. He was encouraged to shoot Capturing the Friedmans by Albert Maysles.
