Multiple people have fallen ill, and an investigation has been launched after a “suspicious package” was delivered to a military base near Washington, according to US media reports.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Joint Base Andrews in Maryland said the building where the package was opened was evacuated “as a precaution.”
An unknown number of people were taken to the medical center on the base. It remains unclear the extent or nature of the illness suffered by those near the package when it was opened.
“First responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and normal operations have resumed,” a JBA spokesperson said.
CNN, citing unnamed sources familiar with the investigation, reported that the package contained a mysterious white powder of unknown origin.
The network also noted that after a Hazmat team assessed the incident, no hazardous substances were detected.
