On September 2, 2021, Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission, met with Kerry, the US President’s special envoy on climate issues, at the appointment.

Yang Jiechi said that for a period of time, China-US relations have encountered serious difficulties due to a series of serious wrong actions taken by the US to interfere in China’s internal affairs and harm China’s interests. China firmly opposes these actions and responds more resolutely. The Sino-US confrontation is not in the interests of any party. China and the United States still need to respect each other, coexist peacefully, properly handle differences, and achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. This is in the fundamental interests of the Chinese and American peoples and the peoples of the world. It is hoped that the United States will proceed from the common interests of China and the United States and the United States itself in its long-term interests, correct wrong practices, treat China and China-U.S. relations in an objective and rational manner, respect China’s political system and development path, pursue a sensible and pragmatic policy toward China, and work with China to promote China and the United States. The relationship is back on track as soon as possible.

Yang Jiechi said that China is open to communication, dialogue and pragmatic cooperation with the US. China and the United States can strengthen communication, coordination and cooperation in a wide range of bilateral fields such as climate change, epidemic prevention and control, economic recovery, and a series of major international and regional issues. At the same time, cooperation must be two-way and mutually beneficial.

Yang Jiechi said that China is implementing the new development concept. China attaches great importance to addressing the issue of climate change, and has taken a series of major strategic decisions and strong measures to address climate change, showing a positive and firm attitude. China respects the right to development and choice of all countries, and China’s own right to development and choice must also be respected. We are willing to strengthen climate change policy exchanges and pragmatic cooperation with the US to promote the full and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Kerry said that the relationship between the United States and China is very important to both countries and the world. The two countries have worked together to achieve the “Paris Agreement.” The US is willing to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with China in a mutually respectful manner to jointly tackle climate change and inject impetus into the improvement and development of bilateral relations.
