New processors from Intel
In addition to Nvidia, April 2, Intel introduced the 10th generation processors under the letter “H”, which are specially designed for gaming laptops and can accelerate to 5.3 GHz. New processors come in three main lines – i5, i7 and i9. And it is i9 that will accelerate to 5.3 GHz from the base 2.3 GHz. The model received the designation Intel Core i9-10980HK.
Overclocking i5 and i7 is slightly weaker – up to 4.6 GHz. The number of cores in processors will vary from 4 to 8.
New processors are aimed primarily at players and creators. Speaking about the new processors, it should be noted that Intel, of course, is a little disingenuous, calling the products the 10th generation. If the other 10 Gen Intel processors are also made at 14 nm, but they have updated integrated graphics, then in the H-version of the graphics – this is the usual Intel UHD. It is understood that such processors will always go in conjunction with discrete graphics, so spending money on Iris Plus is apparently irrational. So it would be more correct to call generation 9+.
The presented processors provide a performance increase of up to 10% depending on the tasks. TDP in new products is old, 45 watts.
Accordingly, when choosing a laptop, in general, there is no fundamental difference to take powerful processors of the 9th or 10th generation.
New graphics from Nvidia
Nvidia approached updating graphics more responsibly than Intel towards processors, trying to surprise the public.
To begin with, Nvidia introduced not only hardware, but also technologies that should pleasantly please the current owners of RTX cards.

But for starters – a joy for all owners of RTX cards. Nvidia introduced DLSS 2.0.
DLSS – Deep Learning Super Sampling is a super important technology that will change the world of games. It was first introduced with the announcement of the first RTX cards. They have separate Tensor Core processors that use DLSS artificial intelligence.
DLSS was supposed to give a more beautiful picture without sacrificing performance. Behind DLSS 1.0 is an idea that is relatively similar to smart TVs that are engaged in intelligent upscaling of images using neural networks. That is, the neural network is shown samples of patterns, colors, textures, after which it should improve the picture in real time, building up the image, based on how it was taught that, ideally, the picture should look like this. That is, the map renders only part of the pixels, and the other part is completed using AI.
In theory, the technology is promising. For example, in the 3DMARK test on an HP Omen laptop, it gave a performance increase of 13 FPS, respectively, instead of 33 fps a player could get 47 fps.
However, DLSS 1.0 was not popular among developers, as it required quite serious preliminary work to create a separate trained neural network for each game. Along the way, DLSS 1.0 was based on the idea that every game is 100% predictable. And if for the characters controlled by the game, this may be so, then when the player interacts with the virtual world, an abundance of random visual situations occurs. Accordingly, when training a neural network, it is necessary to predict all these accidents, which, objectively speaking, is impossible. Well, or requires an abundance of resources and not worth it.
DLSS 2.0 is a leap forward! Nvidia has made a neural network, which itself must adapt to any game. For her, it is not necessary to create separate means for training. DLSS 2.0 will use the current game engine for these purposes.
DLSS works as follows. Usually a video card renders an image completely. DLSS 2.0 allows you to render only 25-50%, and the rest is taken care of. Each game still needs to support DLSS 2.0 so that players can enjoy the technology. But there is good news. Nvidia has already agreed and implemented DLSS 2.0 in Unreal Engine 4. Thus, all games on this engine will support DLSS 2.0.
Especially the performance gain from DLSS 2.0 is noticeable when playing in 4K.
Two news about battery life. Firstly, since DLSS 2.0 removes part of the load from the video card, the battery life, in theory, will increase by as much as 20%. If the laptop under maximum load can work 2 hours, now 2 hours 20 minutes. Little, but little by little, we are building a road to a brighter future.
Another long-awaited innovation is the combination of integrated graphics and Nvidia G-Sync. If you forget, then G-Sync is a technology that synchronizes the frame rate of the game with the refresh rate of the screen. G-Sync is important enough in dynamic games. However, the disadvantage of G-Sync was the fact that for its work, Nvidia required to disable integrated graphics in the laptop. As a result, the battery life was depressing. For example, we recently released a review of HP Omen with a 17-inch G-Sync screen. Due to the fact that the integrated card is disabled in it, the battery life is about 5 hours. And he could give 7 hours.
Now everything will work as it should. During the game there will be G-Sync, and when you sit on the Internet, you will switch to integrated graphics. Switching will be automatic, that is, the user will not be allowed to manually control. But still, this is a very cool feature. Unfortunately, there is not only software, but also hardware, so it will only work on new laptops. So, when buying a laptop, pay attention that with G-Sync, it also supports NVIDIA Advanced Optimus technology.
If you want an ultimate gaming laptop, 300 Hz screens have appeared in the new models of a number of manufacturers. To date, the appearance of 25 models has been announced. This refresh rate is important for reaction shooters. The 144 Hz screen for most games is enough for the eyes.
We draw conclusions. At the moment, when choosing a gaming laptop, in general, it doesn’t matter if he has a 9th or 10th generation of processors. They are approximately comparable in power. In the case of graphics, on the contrary, you should choose the most modern solution. Firstly, it is a performance boost. For example, the new RTX 2017 Super Max-Qs are comparable in performance to the desktop versions of regular RTX 2070s.
Secondly, this is the opportunity to get a universal laptop with an excellent screen that supports Nvidia G-Sync, which will still hold the battery well. And instead of 4-5 hours, give out 7-8 hours of work time.
