Why Cristiano Ronaldo joined Manchester United

So Manchester is red, at least for Cristiano Ronaldo. Juventus sports director Federico Cherubini now explained a few details of the quite surprising return.

In the future he will wear red again at club level: Cristiano Ronaldo.

After twelve years of abstinence, it was said: He is back. Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford came a little out of nowhere, however, as Federico Cherubini fared little different from many fans. “A week before we were sure that he would stay,” said Juventus’ sports director in an interview with “Tuttosport”.

But then a now 36-year-old CR7 packed his bags and switched to Manchester. And not to Meister City, as it had been relatively specific in the room for days, but to his old love United, who brought him from Portugal to the scene of top European football in 2003.

An offer that could be refused – and a new concept

Cherubini now gave insights into why the old lady sold her goal guarantee not in the light blue but in the red part of the English football city: “Manchester City did not want to pay a penny for him, the necessary conditions were not met.”

“Manchester United (the Red Devils paid 15 million euros plus bonuses, d. Red.) Behaved differently, a club with tradition”, the sports director could not resist a swipe in the direction of the Skyblues. He then explained how Juve wanted to replace the Portuguese (101 goals in 134 competitive games for Turin).

This is actually “impossible”, said Cherubini, who is now following “a different plan” with the old lady. The return campaign of 21-year-old Moise Kean “is a signal for the future. We have brought back a home grown man. Here at Juventus there is room for players from our youth division.”
