The Cong Viettel’s start to the 2023/2024 season is not really impressive. Through 6 rounds in V.League 2023/2024, the team won 2, drew 2 and lost 2, got 8 points and ranked 9th on the rankings. Most recently, they lost 0-2 to “neighbor” Hanoi FC at Hang Day Stadium. This is a very disappointing result, especially when this season, the The Cong brand has returned to the team.

An inevitable decision has been made. Accordingly, The Cong Viettel leaders decided to change positions between coach Thach Bao Khanh and Mr. Thomas Dooley. Accordingly, Mr. Thomas Dooley will take on the role of head coach of the club in the near future, while coach Thach Bao Khanh will sit as Technical Director. A decision to change roles is necessary for the military team at this time, in order to soon return to the championship race.
What is special about coach Thomas Dooley?
Mr. Thomas Dooley served as Technical Director of the military football team twice, including the period 2019 – 2020, and was just reappointed in March 2023. While still playing, the man born in 1961 played for the clubs Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke 04 and wore the captain’s armband of the US national team at the 1998 World Cup.

Starting his coaching career in 2003, Mr. Thomas Dooley worked as Technical Director of the American Football Academy, assistant for the U20 team and the US national team.
Mr. Thomas Dooley left his mark during his time leading the Philippines national team, helping this team reach the semi-finals of the 2014 AFF Cup, participate in the 2019 Asian Cup and rise to 111th place on the FIFA rankings.
