Vincent Kriechmayr has been in the World Cup for over ten years. But it has never been as successful and popular as this season. The 29-year-old owes his new status as an Austrian national hero primarily to the two gold medals in Cortina in the downhill and in the Super-G.
Kriechmayr also won sympathy with a slightly tipsy appearance in the ORF World Cup studio. Despite all the euphoria about the double world champion, that “didn’t necessarily have to be”, says Kriechmayr in an interview with Ö3 this week.
It’s always faster
Two months after the gold rush, the radio station is looking for clues and, in a conversation with Kriechmayr, tickles a key reason for its success. “Basically, I have no problem giving full throttle and putting my health at risk,” says Kriechmayr.
The winner of this year’s Super-G crystal ball concretizes his willingness to take risks with the following scenario: “If my ski company comes and says: With this ski you are a second faster, but it will also be more dangerous – then I would always take it.”
Girlfriend: Don’t meddle too much
At the same time, the Upper Austrian demands the greatest possible protection from organizers such as Kitzbühel along the route: “If I take this risk in hand, I also want the necessary security to be provided, i.e. care in the event of a fall or good safety nets.”
Kriechmayr shares this attitude with his girlfriend Michaela Heider, who is herself an active ski racer in the World Cup. “It’s a good thing that she’s also a racing driver,” says the nine-time World Cup winner. “But we don’t want to coach each other too much because she has good coaches, I have good coaches. It is better not to interfere too much. “
Hundreds of millions? D rather not!
Kriechmayr enjoys life together in the ski circus – and appreciates the great fortune to be able to earn money with it. «I earn very well, but I also know that I am very privileged. Earning money with my passion cannot be taken for granted. “
The fact that skiing, despite all its popularity, is not as popular as football worldwide, also has advantages for Kriechmayr. “The footballers are more in the spotlight. They cannot go public without being recognized. I would never want to swap with Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. They can earn hundreds of millions if they like, I’m not jealous. ” (sri)
