VIDEO. “One for the team”: shot putter Jolien Boumkwo fills in (with a smile) as a hurdler at the European Games

At the European Games, Jolien Boumkwo (29) suddenly appeared in the 100m hurdles. Our compatriot is actually a shot putter, but due to injuries within the team, she was allowed to prepare for a new adventure in Krakow-Malopolska, Poland.

She is the best Belgian shot putter of the moment, she set her own Belgian record a few days ago in Sittard. But on Saturday afternoon, Jolien Boumkwo can prepare for a completely different discipline. Due to injuries, the Belgian team lost no fewer than two hurdle runners. Anne Zagré passes for the 100 meters, Hanne Claes then has to let the 400 meters pass.

And so a solution had to be found, because our athletes are urgently looking for points at the European Games if they want to maintain themselves in the highest division. Belgium is currently thirteenth out of sixteen countries after the first day of the European Athletics Championships for national teams, which is part of the European Games. The numbers 14 to 16 drop to the second division, so all points are welcome.

That is why Boumkwo was allowed to try the hurdles this afternoon. “This is not a joke,” said the 29-year-old from Ghent, who is ultimately looking forward to the adventure. “One for the team”, she also says. This is followed by some photos of Boumkwo doing hurdles. And if she saw it…

Boumkwo eventually finished last in her race. While the rest had long since crossed the finish line, the Belgian pulled off a famous final sprint. Much to the delight of its competitors.
