Vanitas June 2009 /// Terra est vanitas, casts, cracks, vanities and voids // Vanitas Thesis. Master in Graphic Art ESAG Penninghen, major mention excellent. Vanitas in Latin means empty, vain. It is a triptych on contemporary vanity, namely vanity of the body, knowledge and moral vanity. Vanitas uses ceramics as an element of the graphics. A ceramic skull broken down into thirteen pictograms is the starting point of this thesis. A video animating the ceramics in stop motion contrasts new ephemeral technologies and traditions. Each of the skull pictograms is “destroyed” in order to reflect the passage of time.
