U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the Pentagon would continue to support Taiwanese forces, but declined to comment on whether U.S. forces would defend Taiwan against China, AFP reported.
Austin told reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium on the 22nd local time, “We will continue to help Taiwan have the level of capability it needs to defend itself.”
“We will continue to focus on things like this,” he added, adding that he would not comment on the Taiwanese assumptions.
Austin also added that the US promises the ‘one China’ principle, but that does not prevent the US from providing aid to Taiwan, including powerful military equipment.
U.S. President Biden once again reiterated that the U.S. would defend Taiwan if China attacks Taiwan.
President Biden’s response could be interpreted as military intervention in Taiwan, sparking controversy over the possibility of policy changes related to Taiwan and China.
