Helmets, protective vests or anti-drone systems – the FDP is coming up with new tones in support of Ukraine. One sees the existence of Ukraine threatened by Russia. The federal government has so far spoken out against arms deliveries to Kiev.

Within the federal government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Economics Minister Robert Habeck had already indicated that he saw arms deliveries to Kiev as a possibility.

The defense policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group, Marcus Faber, is now in favor of it – in the event that Russia threatens the existence of Ukraine. Then you have to support talking through defensive devices:

“Helmets, protective vests or anti-drone systems are conceivable. There shouldn’t be any bans on thinking when it comes to supporting the defense of a democratic state.”

The chairwoman of the defense committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP), continues to reject arms deliveries, because this was agreed in the coalition agreement of the traffic light coalition of SPD, FDP and Alliance 90/Greens. In general, there is talk of crisis areas to which no weapons may be delivered. In particular, exports to countries outside the EU and NATO borders are to be restricted.

Under the government of Angela Merkel (CDU), a few days before the end of her term of office, when Olaf Scholz was still Minister of Finance, arms deliveries from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Diehl Defense were approved by the Federal Security Council. Most of these went to Egypt. Scholz was among the seven ministers who agreed. At the time, left-wing foreign politician Dağdelen spoke of a “heavy burden” for the traffic light government.
