The nuclear repository in Switzerland has its price – Aargau

The siting region receives compensation payments / three potential sites formulate their financial demands.

(BZ). In the coming year it should be known where a deep repository for radioactive waste is being built in Switzerland. The regions Jura Ost, Nördlich Lägern and Zürich Nordost are still in the running. In a joint press release, the three Swiss siting regions in question are now calling for binding commitments for compensation. The communication states: “The three potential siting regions are ready to make a contribution to solving a national task. This, however, not for free, but for an amount of at least CHF 800 million, as originally planned by the waste disposal authorities.”

That is how far the search process is

The search process for a location for a deep repository for radioactive waste in Switzerland is approaching an important milestone: Next year the National Cooperative for the Storage of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) will announce which of the three locations it wants to pursue and will submit a general license application for this .

The polluter pays principle
The decommissioning of nuclear power plants and the disposal of radioactive waste are financed in Switzerland according to the polluter pays principle, as is further explained in the communication from the three regions: The estimated total costs for the decommissioning and dismantling of the nuclear power plants as well as for the disposal of radioactive waste are estimated in the most recent cost study from 2016 at almost CHF 24 billion. “

The compensation payments
The communication from the three regions goes into the background: “The sectoral plan procedure for deep geological repositories determines how sites for deep repositories for radioactive waste are selected in Switzerland.” Accordingly, it is envisaged that the siting regions and cantons should negotiate compensation payments with those responsible for waste disposal towards the end of the third stage of the procedure. Compensation means financial compensation in favor of the siting regions. They are used to compensate for services that the regions provide to solve a national task.

This is what the regions do
In a letter to the administrative commission of the decommissioning and disposal fund (Stenfo), the regions of Jura-Ost, Nördlich Lägern and Zurich Nord-Ost are demanding binding commitments as part of the 2021 cost study, as they inform. Those responsible for disposal could only fulfill their task if a region served as a location for a deep geological repository. At a meeting with Federal Councilor Simonetta Sommaruga, the three regional presidents emphasized their position and emphasized the demand for a binding commitment for compensation.
