‘The Accountant’, with Ben Affleck

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a mathematical scholar with a greater affinity for numbers than people. Under the cover of a small town agency, he works as a freelance accountant for several of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Legal Department of the Ministry of Finance led by Ray King (J.K. Simmons) hot on his heels, he takes over a legal client: an avant-garde robotics society in which an accounting secretary (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy amounting to millions of dollars.

The script of The accountant presents the story by alternating between flashbacks and the present of the story, and we travel back to the childhood of Affleck’s character to his present day involved in criminal activities. Through hindsight, the director constructs Wolff’s past and we look at the causes that contributed to his psychological characteristics, regardless of the Asperger syndrome he suffers from. One of them is his family, made up of his brother and two oppressive parents who favor a very systematic and overwhelming teaching for children. As a result of this we will see the obsessive personality of the protagonist.

Ben Affleck’s leadership

The last two films he has brought to the big screen Gavin O’Connor (Matter of honor, Warrior) have had Ben Affleck as the protagonist of the respective casts. The first time that director and actor joined their talents was in the film that is broadcast today on television, The accountant, repeating union four years later, in The Way Back (2020).

As well as Ben Affleck, whom we recently saw in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, on The accountant highlights the presence of Anna Kendrick (Dana Cummings), nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA, in the category of Best Supporting Actress, for her performance in Up in the Air (2009). Special mention also deserves J.K. Simmons, who was able to win the triple crown, as Best Supporting Actor, for his work in Whiplash (2014).
