Team spirit: green jersey wearer Jakobsen crosses the finish line with the entire team in the last mountain stage Vuelta | Vuelta Ciclista a Espana

With this Vuelta, the Belgian team once again had a successful Grand Tour with four stage wins (three times Jakobsen, one time Florian Sénéchal).

The team will normally take home the green points jersey in the Vuelta tomorrow for the first time in the team’s existence. The very tough last stage in line didn’t change that either – Jakobsen reached the finish within the time limit.

Teammates Andrea Bagioli, Jozef Cerny, Zdenek Stybar, Mauri Vansevenant, Bert Van Lerberghe, James Knox and Sénéchal assisted the sprinter and crossed the finish line with him. This of course resulted in beautiful pictures. Also symbolic, because Jakobsen returned to the sprint top during this Tour of Spain after his heavy crash in the Tour of Poland last year.

More than a year after he had to fight for his life in a Polish hospital, the 25-year-old sprinter from Heukelum will be the fifth Dutchman to win the points classification in the Vuelta. Bas Maliepaard (1963), Jos van der Vleuten (1966), Jan Janssen (1967 and 1968) and Bauke Mollema (2011) preceded him.

“This is great,” said the sprinter, who got off his bike after the finish and held it triumphantly above his head. ,,I’m so happy that I crossed the finish line with all the boys. Without them I would not have won those sprints and therefore I would not have ridden in the green. They always rode by my side. I love my teammates and I love being part of Deceuninck-Quick Step. I am very proud. The last few days have been very hard, the legs are empty. I am happy with what I have achieved, I could not have wished for better.”
