Teacher jailed for having sex with a student who “looked” like her husband

A former high school teacher who confessed to having sex with a teenage student in a classroom pantry was sentenced to two years in prison.

Laura Bucy, 34, from Ohio in the United States, who worked as a home economics teacher, pleaded guilty in June last year to sex battery – a third-degree crime – after admitting to having a sexual relationship with the 17 year old boy in 2018.

Presumably she told police that the student “looked and acted like her husband” and they shared a “very strong bond”.

The teenager often came to Bucy’s classroom to help her clean up, according to an arrest report from Oxygen

She was given a two-year sentence on Wednesday after the victim and her parents made emotional statements detailing the long-term harm that her sexual abuse has caused their family.

“You seriously injured this boy,” said the father of the unidentified victim The Columbus Dispatch. “We fear it will never be the same again. I hope the court sends you to prison. “

The student’s father said Bucy told his son that he could never tell anyone what happened because he could lose his job and his children, the publication reported.

The teenager, who did not appear in court, issued a written statement that was read aloud. He described how Bucy felt “had all the power over me” during the illicit relationship.

He believed he could get him into trouble at school or alter his grades, according to local WOIO station.

Bucy turned to the victim’s family saying, “Every day I think about what happened and how difficult it must be for your family. I am so sorry for the pain I caused to the victim, his family, my family and my colleagues. “

The relationship took shape at a time when Bucy “felt very overwhelmed by having three children to care for, work and attend college,” according to the police report.

She originally pleaded not guilty to the charges, according to local reports, and was subsequently released after making a $ 50,000 bail while ordered to have no contact with the teenager.

She later pleaded guilty (September 2018), told police that the teenager “looked and acted” like her ex-husband and confessed to having sex with him in a classroom pantry after lunch in February or March.

She told investigators that she and the boy only had sex once, but later the couple exchanged sexually explicit photos and videos on Snapchat, a social media application that allows photos and videos to disappear after 24 hours. .

Bucy admitted that he supplied the liquid for teens for use in his vaporizing device and allowed him to use it in his office because he knew he liked it.

He also admitted to having bought about $ 10 of marijuana from another student, police said.

In his statement, the boy said he started “drinking alone in my room on weekdays”.

“I started isolating myself from others and stopped communicating with my family so that I could be alone,” he said.

“I pray that you will never be allowed to work with students,” said the teenager, adding that the abuse had harmful effects. “No child should ever have to go through this.”

According to Bucy lawyer Larry Whitney, the former teacher had a “great remorse” and wanted to get to the “bottom of why this happened.”

Before being sentenced, Whitney claimed that Bucy suffered from a mental illness, which played a role in his behavior, according to Oxygen.

The judge decided that prison time was appropriate, not just probation and therapy, and said he would consider early release after six months.

“Of course, I believe there are some real concerns that you are going ahead,” said Judge Ross.

Bucy, who is now due to register as a sex offender as part of his sentence, has given up on the teaching certificate.
